I’ll also be revealing what to expect in San Francisco each month. Such as the top activities for the season and road trip suggestions to make the most of your visit.

September has the finest weather for trips to San Francisco

Traditionally, the greatest time to visit San Francisco for the weather is September. It’s simple to see why, given the relatively warm weather, low chance of rain, and the fact that we’re just over the fog season. You may easily go trekking, roam about in t-shirts, and take advantage of the long daylight hours.

The hottest months to visit San Francisco are September and October during the fall season, which may seem surprising. This is also known as the “Indian Summer”.

The average temperature throughout these two months is 63 F (17 C), with highs of 70 F (21 C) and lows of 55 F (13 C). In recent years, the highest recorded temperature was 76 F (24 C) in 2017. November becomes much cooler, with a high of 64 F (18 C) and a low of 52 F (11 C).

The rain resumes in October, beginning with two days on average and increasing to six days in November. As the fog dissipates, it’s an excellent opportunity to explore the many Bay views while the weather remains warm and dry.

Hotel expenses and crowds

Despite fewer tourists, hotel rates in September are the highest of the year, most likely due to Salesforce’s large-scale Dreamforce event. This is also the period with the highest hotel occupancy rates, which reached 75% after 2021.

Average hotel prices peak at around $280 in September before declining sharply to $265 and $240 in October and November, respectively. Fortunately, as you plan your fall road trips, you’re likely to find lower pricing outside of the city.

The number of people passing through SFO is lower than in the summer, but it is comparable to the crowds seen in May.

Events Holidays, and Things to Do

A lot is going on in the San Francisco Bay Area during the fall, with plenty of things worth heading out to nearby. Half Moon Bay, for example, has the well-known Fall Pumpkin Festival, and you can also go sunflower harvesting in beautiful yellow fields.

This is also a perfect time to enjoy the harvest season at various vineyards, such as by visiting Napa Valley or going wine tasting. Keep an eye out for beautiful fall colors closer to November.
